9 Lives – (Kelly Hays)

Kelly is an Arkansas thru-hiker who completed the Appalachian Trail after emergency surgery. Former D1 basketball player turned long-distance hiking inspiration and now ultra-runner.

Nine Lives on the Trail

Kelly Hays, known throughout the hiking community by her trail name “9 Lives,” represents one of the most inspiring resilience stories in modern thru-hiking culture. Her journey from college basketball courts to America’s most challenging trails embodies the transformative power of outdoor adventure and the unbreakable strength of the human spirit.

Growing up in Conway, Arkansas, Kelly’s world revolved around basketball. She dominated at Conway Christian School, claiming a state championship her junior year before advancing to play Division I basketball at the University of Central Arkansas. But a devastating knee injury shattered those dreams, cutting short her college career and forcing her to abandon the sport that had defined her entire life. It remains one of the hardest losses she’s ever faced.

In the aftermath, Kelly discovered something that would reignite her passion: long-distance hiking. Through videos by Dixie of Homemade Wanderlust, she stumbled upon a world where mental toughness, endurance, and discipline, all the lessons basketball had taught her, could carry her through epic adventures. The trail gave her what basketball had been taken away: a new challenge, a grand purpose, and a path forward that rejected the traditional life script.

Building a Legacy on the Trail

In 2021, Kelly set out to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, her first long-distance trail. What should have been a triumphant beginning nearly ended in tragedy. Just six days into her hike, she woke with excruciating abdominal pain. With two friends she’d known for only three days by her side, she pushed through 4.5 miles to the nearest road, each step agony.

At the hospital, doctors discovered an eggplant-sized ovarian torsion on the verge of rupturing. Within 30 minutes, Kelly was on the operating table. They removed her ovary. The next day, her father flew in to be with her. Days later, she was wheeled through an airport in a wheelchair… a humbling descent from hiking ten miles to complete immobility.

That medical emergency earned her the trail name “9 Lives,” given by her friend Lost and Found. The surgery had taken one of her trail lives, but she still had eight more to spare.

Most people would have called it quits. Kelly returned after exactly three weeks of recovery. Her first night back was the worst night of her life. Severe vertigo plagued her for a week. Her surgical incisions, right where her pack sat, screamed with every step. Day by day, she questioned whether she could continue. But after three weeks of pushing through, something shifted. She found her rhythm again. She completed the Appalachian Trail.

Following her AT success, Kelly set her sights on the Pacific Crest Trail, preparing for a northbound attempt in 2022. She upgraded her gear, swapping her frameless Waymark LITE 50L for a framed THRU 40L pack and her Big Agnes Tiger Wall for a Zpacks Duplex. But she also carried something heavier: the fear of another medical emergency, concerns about desert heat and rattlesnakes, anxiety about snowy mountain passes with terrifying drop-offs.

The Philosophy of 9 Lives

What sets Kelly apart in the hiking community isn’t just her remarkable comeback story, it’s her approach to the trail and life. She rejects over-planning and stress, preferring to figure things out as she goes, learning from other hikers and locals along the way. She carries luxury items without apology: lavender essential oil and an electronic air pump for her sleeping pad. She embraces the mental and physical challenge of thru-hiking with the same competitive fire she brought to basketball.

Kelly’s content features her authentic personality: her love for anything outdoors, from kayaking Arkansas rivers to snowboarding in Colorado, her summer adventures at music festivals, and her unfiltered perspective on the hiking life. She lives actively even off-trail, hitting the gym, doing CrossFit, practicing yoga, running and swimming. She’s known for her honesty about fears and struggles, never pretending the trail is easy.

A Voice for Perseverance and Growth

Through her YouTube channel and Instagram presence (@kellyhays23), Kelly has built a following by sharing not just the scenic vistas, but the real, sometimes painful truth about life on trail. Her message extends beyond hiking technique and gear reviews. She’s open about her deeper motivations: growing closer to God, discovering her next life chapter, and learning to release fears beyond her control.

Drawing inspiration from her lifelong role model Michael Jordan, Kelly lives by the philosophy that success comes through hard work, discipline, and countless failures. His words fuel her determination: “I have failed over and over again and that is why I succeed.” “Limits like fears are often just an illusion.” “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”

Connect with 9 Lives

Kelly continues to share her adventures and hard-won trail wisdom with the community. Whether she’s tackling another long-distance trail, inspiring others with her comeback story, or simply enjoying Arkansas summers on the water, 9 Lives remains a genuine voice in the thru-hiking world.

As Kelly’s journey proves: sometimes the trail demands more from us than we ever imagined giving. But those who refuse to quit, who push through emergency surgery and vertigo and pain and fear, emerge stronger. For anyone facing their own obstacles or considering their first thru-hike, Kelly’s story stands as powerful testament that limits are often just illusions, and that with enough lives left to spare, anything is possible.
